The Rookie Season 8 ended with the death of Monica Stevens. This came as a surprise to fans because the season finale mainly focused on introducing new threats for the team while advancing several personal storylines, especially those of Lucy Chen, Tim Bradford, and Miles Penn.
Over the years, The Rookie gained a solid reputation among police procedurals. Mainly due to the show’s ability to blend engaging case-of-the-week stories with meaningful character development.
Following a long break over the summer, showrunner Alexi Hawley has now shared some early details about what’s ahead.
In an interview with TVLine, Hawley confirmed that filming for season 9 officially began on July 21, 2026. He also revealed that the season premiere will lean heavily into romance and emotion, while still delivering plenty of action. In a separate conversation with TV Insider, he added that the new season will pick up roughly one to two weeks after Season 8 left off.
To recap, Season 8 concluded with Tim and Lucy getting engaged, only for the couple to be abducted before they had the chance to celebrate. At the time, no one at Mid-Wilshire had any idea what happened to them, so how that mystery unfolds and how the team eventually learns the truth is going to be a major storyline early in the new season. Meanwhile, Penn’s long-awaited graduation has already been confirmed for Season 7, although the show won’t showcase this on-screen. This may disappoint some fans hoping to see that milestone play out.
The confirmed time jump also raises interesting questions. Does it mean Tim and Lucy remain missing for that entire stretch, or will the show fill in the blanks through flashbacks showing what happened to them during that time? Either way, Hawley’s comment about the premiere being especially romantic strongly suggests the season will open with a heavy focus on the couple’s reunion and relationship.
ABC has not included The Rookie Season 9 in its 2026 fall lineup. Which means the network is instead holding it for a midseason release in 2027. Still, with filming now underway, fans can likely expect plenty of behind-the-scenes content from a cast that’s historically been very active and engaged with its fanbase online.
