Agatha Christie is one of the few names that have left their mark on mystery fiction. Her career is filled with extraordinary work: 66 detective novels, 14 short-story collections, and six romance novels. Many of her is adapted for film and television shows.

BritBox is adding to that legacy with Hercule, a new series offering a fresh take on Christie’s most famous detective. There is no official release date, but details about the show’s production are creating buzz among readers.

The series will centre around Hercule Poirot (a beloved Belgian detective), and unlike in the past, we will see a much younger version of the character. The showmakers plan to explore his younger version and showcase the relationships that helped him become a brilliant detective.

Viewers will see his friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his first meeting with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and his introduction to the villain. The series will also feature three adaptations of Christie’s most acclaimed mysteries, blending Poirot’s origin story with familiar detective cases.

Why I Am Not Okay With This Deserves More Love Than It Got

Edward Bluemel is taking over the role of young Hercule. He is known for his work in My Lady Jane and, more recently, for playing Jeremy Thesiger in Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. Bluemel has expressed his excitement to carry forward the Poirot legacy. Written by Benji Walters and directed by Jonny Campbell.

BBC Studios is producing the show, and Jon Farrar, Chief Content Officer of BBC Studios for Direct-to-Consumer content, expressed his enthusiasm towards bringing one of Christie’s most loved characters on the screen. According to Farrar, Bluemel’s charisma and energy played an important role in giving the studio confidence in the approach. The broader goal, he explained, is to introduce North American viewers to a version of Poirot that feels recognizable while still offering something new.

Jack Gleeson, James D’Arcy, Henry Ashton, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Mawaan Rizwan are some of the other names that will be joining with Edward Bluemel. The filming of the show began earlier this summer.

One of the most interesting details to emerge so far involves which Christie story will kick off the series. As per the reports, Hercule will begin with Lord Edgware Dies, first published by Agatha Christie in 1933 as the seventh novel in the Poirot series. The story follows actress Jane Wilkinson who asks Poirot to help her get a divorce from her husband, Lord Edgware. The mystery begins when it is revealed that Lord Edgware has already agreed to the divorce and sent Jane a letter confirming it, which she denies receiving. Just when you would expect the situation to resolve, a deadly u-turn takes place, and Lord Edgware is found murdered. This brings Poirot, Hastings, and Japp together for a complicated investigation filled with twists. The novel was also published under the title Thirteen at Dinner.

Choosing this particular story as the series’ entry point seems like a deliberate and strategic decision. Lord Edgware Dies is widely regarded as a quintessential Poirot mystery, filled with the kind of misdirection and psychological complexity that made Christie’s writing so enduring, while also carrying its own established history within the character’s screen adaptations. Pairing that story with a younger, still-developing version of Poirot gives the series a strong foundation to build both mystery and character growth simultaneously.

While fans will still need to wait for an official premiere date, everything revealed about Hercule so far suggests BritBox may have another hit detective series on its hands. With Christie’s timeless storytelling at its core, a promising new lead performance from Bluemel, and a strong supporting cast rounding things out, Hercule is shaping up to be one of the more anticipated mystery series in recent memory.
