There are movies that entertain you for a few hours, and then there are movies that stick with you for a long time. Some of which will pull you back for a rewatch, or spark a conversation you didn’t expect to have. The three films below fall firmly into that second category.
Whether it’s Lynch bending reality in the Hollywood hills, Nolan architecting a world built from dreams, or Scorsese painting a portrait of loyalty and betrayal on the streets of Boston, each of these films does something that great cinema is supposed to do. It makes you feel something, and then it makes you think.
Mulholland Drive (2001)
It has been over two decades, but still argue about Mulholland Drive, and there’s a reason behind it. David Lynch didn’t make Mulholland Drive to be seen once and forgotten; he made it to be felt.
On the surface, it’s the story of Betty, a bright-eyed actress who rolls into Los Angeles full of hope, and Rita, a woman she finds hiding in her apartment with no memory of who she is or how she got there. What begins as something close to a mystery slowly dissolves into something far stranger and more unsettling.
What makes this film so magnetic is Lynch’s use of Hollywood itself as the villain. How he showcases the glamour, the auditions, the desperate need to be someone. Naomi Watts gives one of the most underrated performances in this film.
Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan is one of the highest-rated filmmakers of our time. He loves to play with time and perception. Inception is one of those movies where he went all in on a thief who breaks into people’s dreams to steal their secrets, and now being asked to do the opposite: plant an idea so deep it feels like the target thought of it themselves. It sounds complicated because it is, but Nolan somehow makes you feel every layer.
Leonardo DiCaprio adds an emotional weight to the film; without it, Inception would have been a cold, mechanical puzzle. Instead, it’s genuinely moving in places, a blockbuster that actually earns its runtime. The action sequences still hold up, the Hans Zimmer score is iconic, and that ending remains one of the most debated final shots in recent memory.
As this is a Nolan film, you will definitely have to rewatch it, not because you missed something the first time, but because you’ll see it completely differently the second time.
The Departed (2006)
The Departed is one of those movies that has many moving pieces but still manages to feel razor-sharp from start to finish. Scorsese drops you into a Boston where nobody is who they claim to be: a cop buried inside the mob, a criminal sitting pretty inside the police force, and a city that can’t tell the difference. The tension that builds from that setup is almost unbearable.
What’s easy to overlook beneath all the bravado and Boston accents is just how tragic the whole thing is. These men have lived their lies for so long that there’s no clean way out for any of them. DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson each bring something completely different to the table, and somehow it all holds together.
Scorsese had been making great films for decades by the time this came out, but The Departed felt like a statement. A reminder that nobody does crime and consequence quite like him. The Oscar was long overdue, and this was absolutely the right film to finally get it done.
