When Suzanne Collins finished writing her first three Hunger Games novels, it appeared that she had completed what she wished to say about Panem. However, after finishing those works, she decided to return to the world of Panem. In her second prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, readers are taken back to the 50th Hunger Games, where we will meet one of the most well-known survivor characters from the Hunger Games series – Haymitch Abernathy.

Now the tale will make its way onto the silver screen. It’s scheduled to premiere in theaters in November 2026; therefore, it’s just a matter of time before the public can see this film. Since there are only a couple of months remaining until the release date, many aspects of the film such as casting, trailer previews, and soundtrack selections are beginning to come together.

In this article, we will cover things that have been revealed until now.

What Role Did Haymitch Play In The Hunger Games And What Made His Story So Important

You might have seen the films, but if that’s all you’ve seen, then Haymitch is the drunkard and fast-talking guide for Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson) during the 74th and 75th Hunger Games. Woody Harrelson has played Haymitch in every film in the series so far, and I think most people would say that he was a funny character, a guy who goes into a room and always says the worst thing at the best possible time.

The original story of Haymitch, however, has consistently suggested that there was much more going on than what we could see. As a winner of the Hunger Games, Haymitch was able to survive in a similar type of environment (an arena), but at a price. The price of his survival influenced nearly every aspect of who he is. Collins’ original novels clearly state that the Capitol punished Haymitch following his victory. This history explains why Haymitch became so bitter, drank so heavily, and why he was so cautious when mentoring the tributes he had to care for.

This is why it would make a great subject for a prequel. Unlike The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which featured a younger version of President Snow, this prequel will focus on one of the characters that fans have grown to love and are interested in learning more about. Until now, the backstory of this character has been largely unknown to fans, but Suzanne Collins is going to provide fans with that backstory.

What Is The Story

The film shows us Haymitch’s Hunger Games, which were the 50th Hunger Games. We have seen Haymitch mentor Katniss and Peeta years later, so we know that Haymitch was able to survive. The question is not whether Haymitch will survive. The question is what Haymitch went through to be able to survive, and what Haymitch became after surviving.

Those games had some extra significance too; it was a Quarter Quell. The Capitol always celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Hunger Games by holding a Quarter Quell and changing the rules prior to the Reaping. When Haymitch competed, his district was required to submit twice as many tributes as usual. This meant that each district was sending four tributes (one boy, one girl) rather than just two, meaning there would be 48 participants in total rather than the typical 24.

The fact that more people will be dying during the games is a dark, depressing detail which dramatically increases the danger of the games. As more tributes enter the games, the space within the arena becomes more crowded, and there are more opportunities for death to occur. Also, if there were more tributes competing for survival, then Haymitch would have been at an even greater disadvantage to survive the games.

How Does The Reaping Process Works

The world of Panem can be overwhelming for those who are unfamiliar with it. It is made up of 12 districts, which are all ruled by the Capitol. Every year, each district must select two children, a boy and a girl, to compete in the Hunger Games. To do this, they hold a Reaping, which is a public event in which a representative from the Capitol selects names from a bowl. At the end of the competition, there will be only one winner who remains alive. Collins stated that she was inspired by gladiatorial games and Greek myth.

District Twelve, home to Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch and Lucy Gray Baird is a poverty-stricken area that mines coal. Those who live within District Twelve may place additional slips with their name on them into the bowl in exchange for either food or other necessities. This exchange is an unjust bargain. The more desperate you are, the higher the likelihood that your slip will be drawn. This process is one of the most poignant examples of social commentary found throughout the entirety of the Hunger Games series and will most likely continue to provide such commentary when the Reaping is the central focus of the novel.

The Main Cast: Haymitch and Lenore Dove

The role of Young Haymitch will be played by Joseph Zada. He is best known for his portrayal of Johnny Sinclair in We Were Liars, an original series for Prime Video that premiered in June. E. Lockhart, the author of the novel We Were Liars, announced that Zada would be returning for the newly commissioned second season of We Were Liars, which is adapted from her prequel novel Family of Liars. Therefore, Zada is in a very unique situation as the star of both of these prequels.

Opposite him, Whitney Peak portrays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s partner. Lenore Dove was born into the Covey, a nomadic group of musicians and performers that Collins created for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Therefore, her involvement links this new tale to the previous prequel. Zada and Peak were both named at the same time in April 2025.

The District 12 Tributes and The Faces of The Capitol

McKenna Grace will be playing District 12’s second female tribute, Maysilee Donner. District 12’s second male tribute, Wyatt Callow, will be played by Ben Wang. Louella is to be played by Molly McCann. Louella’s Capitol-assigned clone, Lou Lou, is to be played by Iona Bell.

The adults who surround the young people are equally noteworthy. Glenn Close portrays Drusilla Sickle, the emotionally distant escort for the tributes of District 12. Drusilla serves as a precursor to Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket. Billy Porter portrays Magno Stift, Drusilla’s estranged husband and the mediocre designer responsible for designing the outfits for the tributes of District 12. This character can be compared to Lenny Kravitz’s Cinna from the previous films. Lastly, Jhaleil Swaby completes the arena cast as Panache, an overbearing and aggressive career tribute from District 1.

Other Cast Members

The excitement of watching a prequel comes from knowing the characters of the original story in their early years. This film contains many examples of such characters.

The roles that were previously made famous by other actors are being played by different actors. For instance, Elizabeth Banks portrayed Effie Trinket, but Elle Fanning will be portraying her. Philip Seymour Hoffman was Plutarch Heavensbee in the Hunger Games series (Catching Fire and both parts of Mockingjay), but Jesse Plemons will be portraying him. Jeffrey Wright was Beetee Latier, but Kelvin Harrison Jr. will be portraying him. Amanda Plummer was Wiress, but Maya Hawke will be portraying her. Wiress had won her own Hunger Games using a mirrored arena, and she mentored the four tributes from District 12 in Collins’ book. Lynn Cohen portrayed Mags in Catching Fire, but Lili Taylor will be portraying her. Mags is from District 4, and she also mentors the group of District 12 tributes in Haymitch’s Hunger Games.

Next up is President Snow. Ralph Fiennes (best known as Lord Voldemort) will take on another major villain role. Donald Sutherland played Snow in the first four films. Tom Blyth took over the role in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the prequel about Snow’s rise to power. Fiennes is able to bring Snow to life during the period of time when Snow has built a reputation for being menacing over the course of several decades.

Will Katniss and Peeta Be There

Yes. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to appear in the fifth installment of the series, a prequel to the previous four films that they starred in. While it has not yet been specified exactly how their characters will be portrayed in the film, the fact that both actors are returning signals that the film intends to tie into the original series significantly more than just being related to it.

Trailer

The first time we got a glimpse of the cast in full costume was when Lionsgate released a teaser for The Hunger Games 2026 on November 20, 2025—a full year prior to the film’s premiere. We were able to see each actor and actress dressed as their respective characters: Close as Drusilla, Zada as Haymitch, Peak as Lenore Dove, Grace as Maysilee, Wang as Wyatt, Plemons as Plutarch, Fanning as Effie, and Fiennes as Snow, to name but a few.

The end of the clip had a voice-over that sounded like Woody Harrelson. This is similar to how The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes utilized Donald Sutherland’s voice as a way to relate the story to the original films. It may seem like a little thing, but it does make an impact; it says “this is the same world,” and “the man who will eventually be Haymitch is also the same person.”

A full trailer was released in April of 2026, which featured additional footage of the newly cast younger actors portraying the same characters as their older counterparts. In addition to being released just prior to the movie’s premiere date, another trailer was released in mid-September. This trailer provided a glimpse into some of the most violent scenes from the book. Suzanne Collins’ novel was a harsh and unyielding tale, and the trailers indicate that the film will not dilute the brutality of the arena.

What About The Songs

Since the very beginning of the series, music has played a huge role, whether through Katniss’ Mockingjay whistle or the songs that helped define Songbirds & Snakes. Now, Noah Kahan has shared that Draw You Out will serve as the first single on the soundtrack for the film.

At this point, there are no other artists who have been announced as part of the soundtrack. However, we do know that there have been a few other artist names associated with some of the song titles in the soundtrack, such as Lizzie McAlpine and Hozier. Therefore, it is possible that there will be additional announcements in the near future. Overall, the current roster of musicians appears to be consistent with the series’ tendency to use emotionally driven folk music to enhance the emotional atmosphere within the series.
