For the past few years, Marvel has been going through a rough patch, with movies like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World struggling to connect with the audience. But with the recent release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the tides are turning.
In its opening weekend, the film was called one of the best Spider-Man movies in two decades and set the record for the largest domestic opening weekend ever. Continuing the run in its second weekend, it recorded the third-highest second-weekend total of all time, trailing only Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame. A rare feat that every film aspires to achieve.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also became the highest-grossing Hollywood release in Indian box office history, achieving that milestone in just 10 days. What’s surprising is that these numbers were set before a large portion of moviegoers had even had the chance to watch it.
As of now, Brand New Day has grossed roughly $1.672 billion worldwide, including $654 million from domestic ticket sales and just over $1.017 billion from international markets. This places the film in 11th position on the all-time worldwide box office chart, just behind Inside Out 2, which earned $1.698 billion. However, if the current pace continues, the film could easily break into the top ten highest-grossing films of all time, a milestone very few superhero movies have managed to achieve.
Much of the film’s success has been tied to renewed excitement around Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, alongside strong word-of-mouth praise for its story and action sequences. Interestingly, this hasn’t been the only massive release Holland has been part of this year. He also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s sweeping historical epic The Odyssey, which has gone on to become the biggest box office hit of Nolan’s entire career. Between the two projects, Holland has quietly been at the center of two of the year’s — and the summer’s — biggest theatrical releases, a rare achievement for any actor working today.
Given how demanding this stretch has been, it’s no surprise that Holland doesn’t currently have any major upcoming projects lined up. Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige addressed this directly, noting that Holland plans to take some well-earned time off following the film’s global promotional tour. According to Feige, Holland and his partner, actress Zendaya, are looking forward to stepping back and enjoying some downtime together after such a hectic period, a break Feige suggested the couple has more than earned.
With Avengers: Doomsday still on the horizon later this year, Brand New Day’s massive success also raises expectations for how Marvel plans to close out this chapter of the franchise. If audience enthusiasm carries over, the MCU may be heading into its next major crossover event with far more momentum than it had heading into this summer — a welcome turnaround after a year that left many wondering whether audience fatigue had finally caught up with the franchise.
