Since Godzilla first stomped onto screens 72 years ago and appeared in more than 30 movies, he is now appearing in a movie with an R rating. Godzilla Minus Zero, the second installment of the award-winning Godzilla Minus One series, received an R rating from the MPA (Motion Picture Association) because of some violent content/bloody images. It is the first time in the history of the Godzilla franchise that a movie has earned this type of rating. All previous movies have been rated G, PG, or PG-13 since the MPA began using these ratings in 1968.

Yamazaki spoke with Variety and explained why an R rating was necessary for some of the scenes. He said:

Logically, as a studio — and even as a director — you want as many people from the general public to be able to see your film. So, an R-rating might seem like a barrier to entry, and conversations about, “Hey, could we have not gotten this down to PG-13?” of course are going to happen. In spite of that, though, there were certain scenes that, for me as a director, were so essential to the film. Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me.

I think the R-rating, at one point, carried almost a negative connotation. In more modern films, it actually creates a sort of expectation and excitement of, “Okay, well, they’re not censoring anything. The director and the cast’s voice is there, as is.” So it is very encouraging to see other films that have preceded us that have already found a lot of success with the R-rating at the box office. Hopefully, we can continue that trend with Godzilla Minus Zero.

According to Yamazaki, the rating was not an accident nor was it a promotional tool. It was the price paid for maintaining the integrity of the film.

He stated that there are no longer negative perceptions of R ratings. He added that R ratings once had a bad reputation and that it is good to see other films have commercial success with R ratings. He would like to see Godzilla Minus Zero do the same. According to reports, at the premiere, he made a joke about how if the film is successful, the studio executives will begin to push for a third film right away.

What The First Reactions Say

The initial reaction to the film has been very positive, with many reviewers attributing the rating to how well the film works. DiscussingFilm’s Andrew Salazar noted that the film was a type of blockbuster that would probably not be allowed in the West, and added that the rating was logical once you saw it.

Film and television editor Greg Pomes stated that the film earns its R rating, and that the sheer brutality of the destruction adds weight to all aspects of the film.

In addition to its positive ratings, there was much praise given to the movie. For example, JoBlo said that this movie is like the Godfather Part II of Godzilla Minus One’s Godfather, and Anthony Orlando (a movie critic) stated that this movie is in the same class as other classic sequel movies such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Dark Knight.

Other critics also said that this movie was very emotional and had a lot of ambition; many critics also mentioned how this movie made them cry. It is interesting to see how people responded positively to a movie in a series where the main focus has always been on giant monsters destroying cities.

A Tough Act To Follow

As such, the high expectations are understandable, as the first film in the series was highly successful. Godzilla Minus One received a 99% critic rating from Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience rating. It made over $116 million globally with a production cost of approximately $15 million.

Additionally, Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. This is the first time a Godzilla movie has received an Oscar. Yamazaki also directed, wrote, and oversaw the visual effects for the first film.

The thing that set this apart from most other monster movies is how well it balanced telling human stories with the mass destruction caused by a huge monster. In some ways, it was like a Post-World War II movie that featured a Kaiju as part of its plot. However, unlike many of those types of movies, this one was rated PG-13.

The initial reaction to Minus Zero indicates that it continues to tell the same type of story, balancing human stories with destruction, but now does so on a grander, more intense level. Therefore, the R-rating appears to reflect the increased level of intensity in the storytelling.

Can The R-rated Godzilla Be Successful At The Box Office

The biggest drawback to a restricted rating is that it limits who can see your movie. However, based on the 2026 box office results, this may not be as big of a problem as many people believe. The top-grossing R-rated film in 2026 was The Odyssey, which had an estimated worldwide gross of $1.727 billion.

Additionally, The Odyssey surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Two R-rated horror films, Obsession ($519.4 million) and Backrooms ($400 million), were both very profitable given their relatively small budgets.

The rating R may no longer be considered a hindrance to moviegoers. Instead, it could become a positive attribute of a film. This is supported by the success of several recent films that have received an R rating, including Deadpool, Joker, and The Odyssey. Yamazaki cited each of these as examples of films that were successful with an R rating, suggesting that audiences are becoming less apprehensive about the R rating. If the trend of R-rated films being well-received by audiences continues, the rating may ultimately be used as a promotional tool for studios.

Story and Cast

The story takes place in Japan in 1949, exactly two years after the conclusion of the first movie. Japan is attempting to rebuild its shattered economy and infrastructure following the destruction caused by World War II. However, peace is short-lived as Godzilla reappears as a new generation of monsters. He has grown bigger and meaner and poses a threat to a vulnerable population. As stated in the official tagline, war reduced Japan to zero; Godzilla pushed it into the negative.

The Shikishima family is still at the core of the story. Ryunosuke Kamiki will be reprising his role as Kōichi Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe will also be returning as Noriko. In terms of new cast members, Masami Nagasawa will join as a weather forecaster who works with the Disaster Response Bureau, and Jun Kunimura will play Dr. Ogata.

The movie is the very first Japanese-made film to use the IMAX format, which was developed specifically for the purpose of creating a much larger image than conventional cinema screens. With the size of the screen and the film’s rating, I am sure this would be an excellent choice to see on the largest screen you can find.

Release Date

Godzilla Minus Zero will be released in Japan on November 3rd; it will have its North American, U.K., and other international releases on November 6th, and an Australian release on November 5th. GKIDS will handle the North American release of Godzilla Minus Zero in conjunction with Toho.
