If you love dogs, then most likely you have researched whether or not the dog dies prior to purchasing tickets. For Ridley Scott’s Post-Apocalyptic Drama The Dog Stars, the dog does die, and this occurs very early in the film.
In this article, we will discuss when the death occurs, how the death occurs, and how the death in the film differs from Peter Heller’s book.

The Short Answer
Jasper is killed, and it happens very quickly. Jasper is present in the first 30 minutes (or so) of the movie. There was plenty of time for Hig to develop a close relationship with Jasper prior to Jasper being killed. This is not the right type of movie if you are looking for a story that ends with the dog alive at the end of the credits.
The user should know from the outset that the marketing is based around the dog in the title and the images used. A movie centered around a canine companion would naturally suggest that he will remain with the group throughout the film. However, Jasper’s passing is what initiates all other events.
What Is The Dog Stars About
The movie was adapted from Heller’s 2012 book and has a script written by Mark L. Smith. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been destroyed by a fatal virus, and most of the human population has died off. Hig, a retired pilot, resides at an isolated farmstead located near an airstrip with his trusty dog, Jasper, and a survivalist who is willing to fight for survival, Bangley.
The two men view life in opposite directions. On one hand, Bangley has lost all faith in people and views everyone else as a possible danger, and on the other hand, Hig still maintains the belief that civilization may exist elsewhere. This disagreement regarding survival vs. humanity forms the core of the story.

Cast of The Dog Stars
Jacob Elordi portrays Hig, while Josh Brolin portrays Bangley. The other two principal human actors are Margaret Qualley, who portrays Cima, a young medical professional, and Guy Pearce, who portrays Cima’s father. In addition to these four actors, Allison Janney and Benedict Wong also have supporting roles.
Ridley Scott initially wanted Paul Mescal to play the lead role in the film. Due to scheduling conflicts, however, Mescal was forced off the project. As a result, Elordi came aboard to take over. Josh Brolin has stated that he almost left the production on his first day as a direct result of Scott’s aggressive filmmaking style; nonetheless, Brolin ultimately remained with the project.
Three Dogs, One Jasper
Jasper is not played by only one animal; three different dogs play the part. One of those dogs (named Rak) was seen on the red carpet with Elordi at the London premiere.

Elordi portrays his relationship with both of them in an extremely warm manner. After having lost all of the people who once populated the Earth, Jasper provides Hig with a feeling of love and connectedness that he desperately seeks. The development of their relationship occurs rapidly and is portrayed convincingly. This is a major factor in why the loss of Jasper affected Hig so deeply.
How Jasper Dies
Hig and Bangley argue at the beginning of the film about the way outsiders are treated. Bangley sees a band of raiders approaching, so he decides to show the gullible pilot what can happen when you let your defenses down. Bangley lets the raiders get close enough to surprise an unsuspecting Hig, and then the raiders attack.
Jasper attempts to save his master. He was so loyal to Hig that he placed himself in front of the raiders and was killed.
The death of Jasper is a sad and dramatic event. The fact that Jasper was neither old nor sick makes the loss even more difficult to accept. He is a healthy dog that dies protecting someone he loves. Moreover, his death occurs under avoidable conditions. These facts create an added layer of pain to the loss of Jasper, and they also give Hig cause for anger.
The after effects of an event are called its aftermath. The term aftermath can also be used as a general term to describe any period of time that occurs after an event has taken place. For example, the aftermath of a natural disaster could include cleaning up debris, repairing damaged buildings, providing aid to victims, etc. In some cases, the aftermath of an event may last for many years or decades.
An example of this would be the aftermath of World War II. After the war ended, there were still many unresolved issues such as the status of Germany, the future of Europe, and the division of Germany into East and West Germany. These issues continued to affect people around the world for several decades after the war had officially ended.
The death of Jasper provides the impetus for the remainder of the narrative. Now that he no longer has a true friend, Hig has little reason to stay on the property. As reported by one reviewer, Hig buried Jasper next to his wife in Denver, and subsequently followed the radio signal which had been received in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The dog’s death sends Hig out into the world. He goes in search of surviving humanity. As he travels through the world, he carries Jasper’s memory. The dog represents the hope and love that Hig will not give up on.
Differences Between The Book And The Movie
The way that Jasper dies in each version of the story will probably seem like something you have seen before, but there are some big differences as well. Jasper’s death in both stories causes Hig to leave and find a community. However, the manner in which this occurs differs significantly.

In the book, Hig brings Jasper up into the mountains to go hunting and fishing. The cold is just too much for the aged dog, and he passes away peacefully in his sleep. This was a sad time, but also a gentle time, as this was the normal way that dogs pass away after having lived a long life.
The way the film is presented is totally different from what you would expect. For example, in Smith’s version of the book, he shows the death of Jasper as being violent and dramatic, not just an old, tired-out dog dying. In fact, Jasper is a young, healthy dog that dies trying to protect his family.
This changes the level of shock value when Jasper dies, but it also allows the viewer to see how this connects back to the overall message of the film.
Why The Change Matters
Hig and Bangley have been arguing about the death of Jasper, so the changed death of Jasper isn’t just to add drama. The death of Jasper is connected to the disagreement between Hig and Bangley.
Bangley sees Jasper’s death as evidence that he was correct: when you take off your guard and let people come near, they will hurt you. To Bangley, Jasper’s death is a lesson in how dangerous trusting can be.
Hig sees this as being different. He has not forgotten the way in which his faithful dog saved him; therefore, he does not see the loss of his faithful dog as a reason to stop trying to help other people. Jasper, for Hig, is representative of both hope and friendship. The passing of Jasper only increases Hig’s desire to seek out human contact.
The film uses the fate of the dog as a means of directing the viewer towards the final point of the film, which is to have faith in fellow human beings. Death is not merely a sad moment. Rather, it is the film’s main argument, demonstrated through what can be considered the most emotionally charged manner available.
Should You Watch The Dog Stars
Depending upon how long you can stand watching animals die in front of you, here are some things that can help you determine whether or not to see this movie:
- Jasper will be dead in less than thirty minutes. Therefore, you should have an idea of what kind of film this is very early on. After that scene, the rest of the film does not involve as much pain.
- The death of the main character is integral to the story. It has purpose and direction and influences every event after it occurs.
- Jasper was killed during a violent attack, so that may be more difficult to view than if he had died peacefully.
- The movie has been altered from the book. If you have already read the book, and you are prepared for an easy, gentle death, then the death in the movie will be much more dramatic.
You may want to hold off watching the movie until it’s released digitally so you can use your fast-forward control if you find the opening sequence too much to take.
For those who are able to sit through the initial setting of the stage for what is about to happen, they’ll discover how the emotional groundwork laid in the first part of the film provides the weight of everything else that follows.
What Are Critics Saying
The film opened in theaters on August 28, 2026, and reactions from critics have been divided. A review stated that although there is a lot of talent involved in the project, the film landed with a thud, saying that both Elordi and Qualley are being asked to provide a sense of movie star appeal, as opposed to demonstrating their ability to act.
Also, the film’s opening at the box office was said to be on the small side when compared to other large-budget summer releases from a well-known director like Scott.
This does not imply that the movie is devoid of an audience. The primary relationship established within the story between Hig and Jasper has received much acclaim. Moreover, even those critics who were unimpressed by the film usually highlight Elordi’s performance working with the dogs.
