The Bridgertons are certainly no strangers to romance. Throughout the course of the series, we’ve seen fake courtships, enemy-to-lovers, friend-to-lovers, and multiple instances where the ton of London was involved in some scandal.

But now the show’s producers have decided to use the same formula to tell us the love story that began it all – the love story of the Bridgerton family’s matriarch.

Netflix has announced that they are developing an untitled limited series within the Bridgerton world focusing on Lady Violet Bridgerton (played by Ruth Gemmell) and her love affair with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The series will be written by Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini and will have Tom Verica as an executive producer.

There have been no announcements made about who will be cast in the series, and no information has been released concerning a possible title or release date for the series. However, it certainly seems like Violet should get a story of her own soon.

For four seasons, Violet has served as an emotionally reliable character in the series. As a mother, she worries about her children’s dating lives during each social season; as a wise woman, she gives insight into love; as a person, she knows that finding a spouse is not only about obtaining a certain status.

Despite all this knowledge, the series has kept most of her relationship with Edmund hidden. We know she loved him and we know he passed away, but we have yet to see their first encounter.

Bridgerton Lady Violet

The new prequel is intended to alter that. The series will depict Violet’s childhood years as Violet Ledger, as well as her relationship with Edmund, who would subsequently father the eight children of the main series (Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth).

In contrast to the expansive social season love stories found in Bridgerton, this story has an exact ending. Violet and Edmund are no mystery. Their marriage forms the basis of the family that viewers are familiar with.

The knowledge that exists within the spinoff itself can be seen as its most significant benefit. In the original series, we have had numerous examples of the impact of Edmund’s death. This loss affected Anthony’s (Jonathan Bailey) view of responsibilities and his experience with grief, as well as Violet’s ongoing loyalty to her deceased spouse, which has influenced her discussions of love with all of her children. Despite his absence from the Bridgerton family home, Edmund continues to exist as a presence even years after his death.

The absence of their courtship will finally be given a face in a series based on their courtship. This provides Bridgerton with another opportunity to present a type of romance that was previously sitting behind the many other excessive love stories within Bridgerton.

Each of the following couples, be it Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) & Simon (Regé-Jean Page), Anthony & Kate (Simone Ashley), Colin (Luke Newton) & Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), and Benedict (Luke Thompson) & Sophie (Yerin Ha), each had their own form of happily ever after. However, the relationship between Violet & Edmund represents the type of love that served as the foundation for the entire Bridgerton family.

The show has ample space for all of the typical Bridgerton fun: large-scale parties, gorgeous clothes, family squabbles, and many romantic moments. However, there is a clear emotional goal for the entire plot, since the audience knows Edmund is going to pass away at a young age, and as such Violet will be a widow.

In both the book and the television version, his demise is sudden and unexpected. He passes away due to being stung by a bee. This makes their time together seem incredibly fragile and special. This provides the opportunity for the series to develop a strong bond between two individuals who have an established future together. While it is a bittersweet arrangement, more like a tragic tale than a traditional love story, this tension can provide some of the best storytelling within the franchise.

Bridgerton Lady Violet ne wspinoff series

Bridgerton has shown that it is capable of doing these types of expansions. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story took viewers back into the past to follow the romantic relationships of a young queen (India Amarteifio) with King George III (Corey Mylchreest) and reveal more about other characters such as Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas) and a younger version of Violet.

The series was initially announced in 2021 as a limited prequel focused on the origins of Charlotte, written by Shonda Rhimes and produced by Tom Verica. This six-episode series proved that Bridgerton doesn’t need to continue to launch a new sibling each year and follow them through a full season. Additionally, the series demonstrated that the franchise could recast its popular characters with younger actors while retaining all of the elements that viewers enjoy about them; therefore, it seems likely that a similar strategy will be used for Violet and Edmund.

Violet has been a character in the Bridgerton world from the start. However, she is primarily viewed as a mother. This new series will allow for the separation of Violet the matriarch from Violet the young woman. Prior to becoming the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, Violet was a daughter, a debutante, and experiencing love for the first time.

Author Julia Quinn wrote about Violet’s early life in Violet in Bloom, which is part of the collection The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. However, the Netflix adaptation will be the first large-scale television portrayal of Violet and Edmund’s relationship.

The schedule works as well. The fifth season of the primary series is currently being produced and will focus on Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela (Masali Baduza). The sixth season will be centered around Eloise (Claudia Jessie). This is consistent with what was stated by Rhimes and showrunner Chris Van Dusen when they initially expressed their desire for the series to continue through eight seasons, each representing one of Julia Quinn’s eight books.

As the romance stories of the remaining members of the main Bridgerton family are already planned out, a Violet Bridgerton prequel provides a way for the Bridgerton franchise to proceed while examining its history.

This is why I believe that this announcement feels different than your standard franchise extension. I don’t think that Netflix is merely trying to milk the last drop of juice out of one of their most successful shows; rather, I feel that they are taking a very thoughtful approach to the Bridgerton concept.

They are attempting to expand upon the world of Bridgerton as opposed to simply expanding it. The series has spent so many years showing its audience the love stories of its main characters (young lovers), but now it will have an opportunity to show us how the romance that began the series came into existence.

The question remains as to who will portray the younger versions of Violet and Edmund. No official announcement has been made regarding the length of the series, nor when it is scheduled to premiere. For now, however, there is a great concept, a talented group of creators, and a romance that many fans of the series have been wanting to see for years. If the writing team is able to convey the emotional extremes of a relationship that everyone knows will ultimately end prematurely, this may be one of the best parts of the franchise.
