The GTA community has a lot to say about the map size of upcoming GTA 6. Every time there’s a new trailer frame released, every time there’s a new screenshot leaked, it’s compared to Los Santos.
At this point, with only weeks until GTA 6 is scheduled to be released in November of 2026, I’m sure that the size of the GTA 6 map is the biggest question. It is the biggest question in everyone’s mind.

What Is The Size Of GTA 6 Map?
Rockstar has not officially released the size of Leonida in square miles or kilometers. However, they did state that this would be their largest map ever. Aaron Garbut, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar, told Game Informer that Leonida is some degree larger than any other map created by the studio.

The online data you see are based on community estimates. Estimates for the area of Leonida range from 118 to 132 square miles (300 to 340 km). This means that the Leonida playable world is approximately double the size of the GTA 5 playable world. Some trailer-based estimates have come up with smaller numbers.
For example, one estimate indicates that Leonida will have 125 km of playable area, and the surrounding bodies of water will create a larger total playable area.
But these numbers don’t add up, as each of these sources is using different amounts of footage, and each has a different definition of what constitutes a map. All should be considered ballparks. However, the most conservative conclusion to make would be: GTA VI has a larger map area than GTA V and Red Dead Redemption II, and is denser than both.
What Is Leonida? The State Behind the GTA 6 Map
If your experience with Grand Theft Auto has been limited to either Los Santos or San Andreas, the way the game is structured will be somewhat different. For example, instead of taking place within one specific city, Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in the state of Leonida (a fictional representation of Florida) and, as such, will allow for a number of different types of cities to exist within the game.
This will have a major impact on the size of the map. GTA V provided us with Los Santos and Blaine County. GTA San Andreas provided us with three different cities and an extensive amount of rural areas. However, it was created at a far earlier stage of technical development. Leonida is being designed to be reminiscent of an entire state, including beaches and swamps, sleepy rural communities, and neon-lit nighttime activities, as well as mountain ranges and island chains.
The real world has provided many great examples of inspiration for Rockstar. One such example is Florida. This state is flat, humid, and odd. There are retirement community neighborhoods only a few miles away from wetland areas that have alligators living in them. Florida has so much of the contradiction that Rockstar finds funny to satirize. This explains why the company returns to this area as well.
The Six Confirmed GTA 6 Regions
The exact list varies depending on who you ask. Some of the sites have listed things such as Hamlet and Kelly County, but Rockstar has yet to confirm these. Of course, the list that appears most often (and includes only those areas that Rockstar has officially confirmed) is: Vice City, Leonidas Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grass rivers, and Mount Kalaga National Park. These are all officially identified parts of Leonida.
1) Vice City
Vice City is the core of the game and has been described by everyone as being massive. It’s a contemporary version of the fan-favorite Miami-style city first seen in 2002. Imagine high-rise glass buildings, beachfront walks, packed nightclubs, and the type of excessive sunlight the series became known for.

The most interesting thing about the size of the game that has been reported in the media so far is the claim regarding the city itself. Many sources have said that Vice City will be approximately two times larger than Los Santos (GTA 5).
These reports are based on attendees of Rockstar’s preview events and not official figures released by Rockstar. Therefore, I would take them as estimates only. However, they do fit in with the images seen in the trailers, which include high-density, grid-like streets, multiple levels of highway systems, and a skyline that is much more crowded than anything that was ever present in Los Santos.
2) Leonida Keys
If Vice City is all about the flash, then the Florida Keys (on which the Keys area of Vice City was based) is the more relaxed, casual side of things. This area is made up of a string of islands connected by bridges. It’s got plenty of marinas, fishing boats, beachside bars, and crystal-clear, shallow waters.

I believe this area will be very different from any other GTA map. Water travel (boats/jet skis), island-hopping, and long bridge drives are all going to allow for different ways to travel. There should be a lot of boat and jet ski action and possibly even some of the best sunset views in the entire game.
3) Grass Rivers
Grass Rivers is a swampy area, and the name alone tells us what to expect. Imagine an Everglades-type wetland, with slow-moving brown water, airboat rides, high-growing grasses, tucked-away cottages, and a lot of things swimming around in that water you would prefer not to see.

Every GTA has areas that the police never visit. This seems like one of those areas. Wetlands are an effective way to introduce new types of terrain into your game, without making you put down another road. Terrains that prevent you from driving right across them force players to slow down and discover more of the world.
4) Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn is the industrial and shipping section of Leonida. Cranes, container yards, warehouses, and working-class neighborhoods. All open-world crime games need a gritty port, and Port Gellhorn appears to be an excellent example.

From a design perspective, many of the heist-like missions take place at ports. Ports provide a great deal of cover, verticality, and locations for hiding getaway cars.
5) Ambrosia
Ambrosia is described as a rural town that provides the map with a slower tempo. It features back roads, farms, and the type of community where everyone is aware of what each other does.
The difference is what counts. After a certain amount of time, a player will tire of a city full of skyscrapers. However, Ambrosia provides a location where a player can catch their breath or create havoc in a completely different manner.
6) Mount Kalaga National Park
Last, but definitely not least, is Mount Kalaga National Park. It is the closest thing on the map to Red Dead Redemption 2’s wild country. There are forests, trails, elevation, and hiking-type scenery.
While Florida doesn’t have many mountain ranges, the presence of Kalaga clearly demonstrates that Rockstar was willing to alter reality to create geographical diversity. I expect this area to provide some of the most stunning views in the entire game.
Why Map Size Is Important (But Also Why It Isn’t)
The first time I wrote a story on games was a year or so before Grand Theft Auto V came out. At that time, many people were comparing Los Santos from GTA V to San Andreas. There were some heated discussions on which city would be more alive when the game was released.

A few other factors will determine this for GTA 6 are:
- Travel Time: Large Maps are fun only if they make travel enjoyable. The way that a player can move through the game world (highways, boats, airplanes, and fast travel) will greatly influence the perception of the size of the game world.
- Density of activity: The amount of things you can do within the preview coverage has plenty of variety. You have side jobs and random encounters. A large world that gives you many reasons to pause is a much larger world than the numbers indicate.
- Regional contrast: Leonida has six distinct regions that have a unique appearance, sound, and mood. This will provide a sense of diversity to the player, even if the world is not very large in terms of its total area.
- Performance: This large, complex game must operate efficiently on console systems. Rockstar has traditionally done a great job of managing performance on console systems; however, you should always be aware of potential performance issues.
Post-Launch Content
Finally, after launching the game, there will likely be post-launch content. Rockstar Games has a strong history of expanding their games with additional content (e.g., Grand Theft Auto V). I can’t say for sure whether Leonida will expand in size or scope after being released. However, I believe that it would fit right in with how they operate.
