The cancellation of Girls5eva has a cruel form of poetic justice. On one hand, the premise of the entire series was that these four women were told that their time had passed. However, on the other hand, the many years in which they were out of the spotlight provided them with even greater material for their comeback than what was available to them when they first experienced fame in their early twenties.

In December of 2024, after being well-received during the first two seasons on Peacock, the series moved over to Netflix, where it was subsequently cancelled. The show that focused on having a second chance did not receive a second chance.

Story

The show follows the four surviving members of a fictitious girl group who were at the peak of their success during the late 1990s/early 2000s: Dawn (played by Sara Bareilles), Summer (played by Busy Philipps), Gloria (played by Paula Pell), and Wickie (played by Renée Elise Goldsberry).

They had stopped being relevant when their hit single, “Famous 5eva,” was no longer popular. However, after a young rapper used the sample, they became relevant again, regardless of how prepared they were.

All of them didn’t end up where they thought they would. Dawn was married to a man, had a child, and worked at her brother’s restaurant. Summer’s marriage was on the rocks. Gloria was a practicing dentist but was still trying to figure out what she wanted from her romantic life. Wickie created a very flashy online presence as a single artist even though he didn’t do anything as a single artist. The final member of their group was Ashley. She had passed away many years earlier due to an unusual infinity-pool accident. As a result, the remaining members of the group were forced to handle the dissolution of their friendships as well as the disintegration of their group.

The reason this works is that the series does not look back with rose-colored glasses. The series explores what happens to these women after they no longer have the music industry telling them how to act. In addition, the series also makes fun of pop culture, how women are treated in the entertainment world, the obsession with celebrities, and how the music industry views youth as the most valuable asset. However, beneath the humor lies a story about friendships and beginning again.

Reviews

Critics were enthusiastic about this show from the first season onward. Season 1 received an average rating of 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Season 2 received an average rating of 95 percent, and Season 3 (the first to appear on Netflix) achieved a perfect score of 100 percent. This suggests that the creators were continuing to find new ways to tell their story.

The cast is what makes the show go. Although Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry have completely different comedic styles, collectively they are four women who have been perfecting the art of annoying, supporting, and embarrassing one another for decades. This chemistry makes the ridiculous storylines seem plausible, as it allows you to see them staying awake late at night to assist one another, only to argue about some trivial detail the following day.

Many people may not realize how important the music in Girls5eva is. Often, in many comedy series, the use of songs is simply for a brief joke. However, Girls5eva uses the music to develop its world, and each original song can be used as a form of satire, to help develop characters, or even both. A lighthearted, meaningless song can quickly turn into a humorous comment on the industry that created it. Since Girls5eva is a show about a pop group, this combination of being authentic and being a parody is critical to developing its uniqueness from other television shows.

Short but Fun Season

Netflix allowed the series to have a home on their service; however, there wasn’t a great deal of time to allow the series to grow. Season three consisted of only six episodes. As such, many times the season seemed as though it was rushing through things in order to try and tell as many stories as possible.

After the group began their tour, they stopped at many different and unusual venues along the way before finally performing in front of an audience at Radio City Music Hall. The season can be very funny, and some of those times are quite extraordinary. However, because of the format of the series, as soon as a storyline became interesting enough to develop further, it was time to proceed to the next episode.

The show has so much more story to tell. They have years of bad times (the early 2000s) to use as flashback material; each time they explain one of their older songs, it will become increasingly ridiculous. Wickie’s failed solo career, Gloria’s romantic history, Summer’s unusual background, and Dawn’s development as a songwriter are all parts of the story that have only just started being explored.

The Ending

The series finale showed all three women perform at Radio City Music Hall. Dawn gave birth; Wickie’s long-forgotten solo song “Yesternights” reached a new group of people. This is a great ending for the series because it recognized that self-reinvention is not achieved through a single heroic event. You do not reach a certain age, overcome a single challenge, and then magically solve your entire life. There may be another opportunity, or what you believed would be the final act of your life could turn into the beginning of something new.

Why We Think It Was Not Renewed

I think television needs more of these types of comedies. Girls5eva was lighthearted (and somewhat ridiculous) but had substance. It was sweet and loving but didn’t cross over into sappy, and it made fun of itself and the industry, yet never lectured us. All five of the main characters are hilarious individually, and as a collective, they are even better. In today’s world where many streaming services drop shows within a few years of their debut, Girls5eva may be the perfect example of a show that will likely lose out due to lack of viewership.

There is another issue: what type of comedy is being supported? Programs designed specifically for females in their late 40s to early 50s, written with love and care for the characters, do not always receive the financial support that more flashy programs do. However, Girls5eva demonstrated that there was a market for this kind of programming, and the reviews indicate that the writers have only begun to develop new ideas.
